The English Premier League announced on the 13th that they have decided to remove gambling advertisements from the front of match jerseys. To facilitate the transition for the clubs, this resolution will come into effect after the end of the 2025-2026 season.
According to British media, there are currently eight clubs in the Premier League including Everton, West Ham United, and Newcastle United whose shirt sponsors are all betting companies, with an estimated sponsorship amount reaching 60 million British pounds (approximately 520 million yuan) annually. However, the "Big Six" of the Premier League - Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham, and Liverpool are not involved.
The Premier League stated in their announcement that this decision was made after extensive consultations with the clubs and relevant UK government departments. This makes them the first sports league in the UK to voluntarily take measures to reduce gambling advertising.
However, the ban only applies to advertisements on the front of the jerseys, which means situations like Aston Villa and Wolverhampton Wanderers, where betting company names appear on the sleeves, will not be affected. Additionally, electronic advertising boards inside the stadium can still display gambling advertisements.
Therefore, organizations that call for the ban of gambling advertisements and sponsorships in football express that the Premier League's action is merely shifting the placement of gambling logos and still allows betting companies to advertise at the sidelines and sponsor the league, which they believe is somewhat illogical. However, they also noted that, while not perfect, it is a significant step forward.
