On December 28, Hong Kong police successfully dismantled a large-scale online romance scam syndicate, known as the "HK Version KK Park." The operation was sophisticated, involving a total of HK$360 million. After months of investigation, the police raided a criminal stronghold in an industrial building in Hung Hom, Kowloon, arresting 27 suspects, including the mastermind, technicians, and 6 university students. Shockingly, these students, mostly graduates in digital media, were responsible for developing the scam platform and providing technical support. They utilized AI and Deepfake technologies to collaborate with overseas fraudsters, creating a fake cryptocurrency investment platform. The scam involved impersonating young, attractive women to approach victims through social media and establish "online romantic relationships." Through the fake cryptocurrency investment platform, victims were lured to invest money, which was then quickly transferred to the criminal group's accounts. The scam targeted Hong Kong residents and people in Southeast Asian countries, particularly singles and investment novices. The police discovered that the criminal group attracted technical talents with high salaries and provided "professional training" for new members, teaching them disguise and scamming techniques. The group is suspected to be connected with Southeast Asian scam networks, with hundreds of victim cases reported, but many victims did not report to the police due to shame, which exacerbated the criminal activities. PS: From 'online romance' to 'investment,' they are not talking about love, but asset allocation!
