I previously came to a company in Cambodia for the money, but the working environment is terribly bad, and the treatment is completely different from what was promised before joining. I want to escape, but my passport is held by the company, and now I am stuck here in a dilemma.
I asked a few colleagues, some said I could directly run to the embassy, but others said if the company does not agree, I can't get my passport back. Moreover, many companies in Cambodia have a "runaway list," and if caught, I might even be sent back and detained for a few days. Is there anyone with experience who can show me a clear way out?
How to retrieve a passport that has been withheld

Stay calm, don't look like you want to run, or you'll draw attention.

Find an excuse, say someone in the family has passed away.

Pretend to comply first, then find an opportunity to get the passport.

The wooden sign company is just a scam machine; it's easy to get in, but hard to get out.
A friend of mine had his passport detained before, and eventually he had to buy it back.
Do you need to compensate financially?
I just have an idea, I haven't started asking yet.

You can just get a travel document, just tell the embassy that the passport was lost.

"Don't need the passport, just go to the embassy."
