The Eastern Police District (EPD) of the Philippines announced on Friday that eight of its officers had been dismissed from their duties and placed under restrictive custody for allegedly extorting a Chinese citizen.
The incident reportedly occurred on April 2, when the involved officers conducted an operation in a high-end residential area in Las Piñas City targeting a Chinese individual.
It is important to note that Las Piñas City falls under the jurisdiction of the Southern Police District (SPD) and not within the enforcement authority of the EPD.
EPD Chief Villamor Tuliao stated that the officers involved did not coordinate with the relevant units prior to the operation and also failed to wear the required body cameras during the enforcement.
The officers are accused of extorting 12 million pesos from the Chinese citizen as a "release fee." Additionally, they are also charged with stealing a large amount of cash and valuable items from the victim, including an expensive watch.
The police have stated that they will initiate both administrative and criminal proceedings against these eight officers to legally hold them accountable.
