Recently, the Cambodian Anti-Corruption Committee announced the arrest of two police officers involved in a case where they were suspected of accepting substantial bribes to illegally release a group of Thai suspects. As the investigation deepened, Cambodian media further revealed a larger scandal:
It turns out that as early as May 2, Cambodian police had arrested 43 Thais in the Poipet area for illegal residency and employment. Between May 4 and May 6, six Cambodian officers were involved in bribery operations, secretly striking deals with relevant parties and collecting a total of $774,000 in bribes under the condition of "ensuring non-deportation" of these Thais.
However, the plot took an unexpected turn: by May 8, all 43 Thais were still officially deported by the Cambodian authorities. The six officers, having taken the money but failing to "fulfill their promise," were subsequently targeted by the Anti-Corruption Committee, and two have now been formally arrested, with the remaining likely facing accountability.
This incident has attracted widespread attention in both Cambodia and Thailand, and has once again exposed the complex interconnections between illegal labor, cross-border migration, and law enforcement corruption.
6 Cambodian police officers took $770,000 to release a suspect, and ended up in jail themselves!
