Kuala Lumpur police raided an office building on Tun Razak Road, dismantling a network gambling group specifically targeting Chinese gamblers, arresting 30 people on the spot, including 29 ethnic Chinese Malaysians and one Chinese national.
The group rented a commercial office unit as a call center, next to a law firm, appearing like a legitimate company. However, it had been operational for only two months, primarily enticing Chinese people to gamble online. It is reported that the scene was filled with young people in their early twenties, each with a computer, who all bowed their heads to avoid the cameras as soon as the police and media arrived.
The police seized a large amount of equipment at the scene: 30 computers, 60 mobile phones, access cards, routers, etc. It is preliminarily judged that the center was controlled behind the scenes by a fugitive Chinese man, with the arrested Chinese national being the person in charge on site.
All suspects have now been taken to the Wangsa Maju police district, and the police are investigating under Section 4(1)(g) of the 1953 Public Gambling Act.
From the choice of location, disguise to the target user group, this operation was clearly a precise setup aimed at the Chinese market.
Malaysia has once again destroyed an online gambling den that specifically targets Chinese gamblers.
