According to reports from multiple mainstream media outlets in the Philippines on July 13, Alejandro Tengco, the Chairman and CEO of the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR), announced that effective immediately, all national television stations will completely ban any form of gambling advertisements during the prime time period from 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM every evening.
This new regulation focuses on protecting young people and family audiences, especially during dinner time when minors are most likely to be watching TV, to prevent them from being exposed to gambling-related content.
From outdoor to television, advertising regulations are being upgraded
Previously, PAGCOR had issued a notice requiring all gambling-related outdoor advertisements and electronic billboards to be completely dismantled by August 15 at the latest. The control of television advertisements is a further measure introduced after communication with the Philippine Advertising Standards Council (ASCP). The two parties are about to sign a formal agreement to ensure the implementation of the policy.
PAGCOR reiterates its stance: against a blanket ban, advocating for regulated management
In an interview with local media, Tengco expressed respect for the stance of some members of Congress who proposed a "total ban on online gambling," but also clearly stated that PAGCOR still adheres to the route of "legal operation and strict regulation."
"We understand the legislators' consideration for the public interest, but we believe that the industry should develop under regulations and systems, rather than being indiscriminately blocked," Tengco pointed out. PAGCOR will continue to promote the orderly development of the gambling industry through system construction and law enforcement cooperation, while maximizing the protection of public and national interests.
