Despite legal prohibition, Cambodia's online gambling industry is still booming, causing concerns
Although gambling is illegal for Cambodians, online gambling sites have flourished, allowing users to easily sign up and deposit money for a variety of sports and casino games. The Cambodian government has acknowledged the problem and said it has not issued any online gambling licenses, according to The Korea Herald.
The Commercial Gambling Management Commission (CGMC) has taken action to crack down on illegal gambling activity, shutting down a large number of online advertising and promotions. However, enforcement remains challenging as these sites continue to cater to Cambodian gamblers with little fear of legal consequences. This has led to growing concerns about gambling-related crimes such as fraud and human trafficking.
Experts stressed the need to strictly enforce Cambodia’s gaming laws to combat corruption and effectively regulate the industry. The government’s ability to manage this industry will greatly affect the country’s international image and public order.
