A prominent opponent of the Philippine offshore gaming industry has called for a ban on all online gambling.

Recently, Senator Joel Villanueva advocated for the passage of Senate Bill (SB) 1281, which, if approved, would comprehensively outlaw Internet gambling and what were formerly known as Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs). Internet Gaming Licensing Scheme (IGL). It is unclear whether the bill covers the growing "remote gaming" market, which allows land-based casino operators to offer live gaming to Filipino citizens.

"There is no doubt that the social costs of gambling far outweigh any benefits," Villanueva said in a statement, citing evidence of human trafficking, fraud and kidnapping among former POGO licensees. "This must stop once and for all."

In addition, he also accused gaming regulator PAGCOR of "unfortunately failing" to ensure that POGOs conduct business in accordance with the law, the Philippine News Agency reported.

Villanueva noted that “POGOs raided in Pampan, Tarlac and Pollac, Pampanga were found to be conducting fraudulent activities.”

"That is why we reiterate our call for a complete ban not just on POGO, but on all forms of online gaming," he said.

Under Senate Bill 1281, anyone involved in online gambling could face a fine of up to 500,000 Philippine pesos ($8,500) or up to six months in jail.
