On July 16, 2024, the Brazilian Congress officially adjourned. The prorogation of Parliament will last until July 31. A draft law aimed at legalizing casinos, bingo, cockfights, horse racing betting and other forms of gambling in Brazil has been awaiting a vote in the plenary session of the Senate for nearly a month.
As previously stated by President Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG), Legal Project No. 2234/22 will be carried out after the prorogation of Parliament vote. According to a report in Istoé magazine, the legal project is expected to be one of MPs' priorities when they return to work. Senator Irajá Abreu (PSD-TO), who is also the project’s rapporteur at the Committee on Constitution and Justice (CCJ), is confident that the legal text will be passed in the Senate.
Irajá Abreu expressed great confidence in the passage of the plenary meeting of the Senate. He said: "We have the support of a majority of senators to pass this proposal. This text has been sitting on the shelf for a year and a half, we have had extensive discussions, the issue has been fully discussed. The issue is ready for consideration, While we respect our colleagues who hold different opinions, at this point it is an ideological issue, a religious issue.”
As one of the main supporters of the proposal, Irajá Abreu believes that its approval will bring many benefits to the country's economy. He said: "This proposal is good for the country. It will bring investments of 100 billion reais over the next five years and create more than 1 million new direct and indirect jobs. Countries that have approved this measure show that tourism The industry has grown significantly. At the same time, Brazil can only wait and see other countries, but it is outside the world tourism cycle.”
