The Philippine Esports Organization (PESO) has imposed penalties on players involved in match-fixing incidents in the Mobile Legends Professional League (MDL).
The move comes after the Philippine MDL earlier suspended three players involved in the incident. MDL Philippines announced the suspension of the players involved on April 25.
Suspended players
Jungler Jhonjie Paul “Jiee” Dela Rosa from TNC Z4, mid laner Raven “Aeris” Arellano and jungler Christian John “Nyija” Calantoc from RSG El Ganador have been banned from participating in any MLBB esports ecosystem competitions for three years. . This suspension includes all MOONTON sanctioned competitions except MDL and Professional League (MPL Philippines).
In addition, from May 2, 2024 to April 30, 2027, PESO’s ban extends to events recognized by the organization, including the SIBOL National Selection Tournament and competitions organized by them.
Committed to integrity and professionalism
In a statement, PESO highlighted its commitment to upholding the integrity of esports and promoting ethical behavior among players. The three-year ban serves as a disciplinary measure to protect the integrity of competitive gaming and ensure fair competition at national and international levels.
"While it can be tempting to make money quickly, we remind talented young people to maintain their integrity, as this is the cornerstone of real success and lasting progress," PESO said.
"At PESO, upholding professionalism and ethical conduct is critical to our mission and we are committed to developing players who will represent the Philippines and strive for glory at the World Championships," it added.
In a press conference, MOONTON Games’ head of esports league operations Matthew Chan explained that the decision to impose a three-year ban was based on the seriousness of the violation and a specific time period. This period represents one of the most severe penalties MOONTON has ever imposed for a similar incident, demonstrating the seriousness of the breach.
Marlon Marcelo, executive director of PESO, stressed the importance of giving players a chance to reform while also acknowledging the seriousness of their actions. He expressed the hope that the three-year ban would give the offender a chance to reflect and come back.
Collaborative efforts to prevent future incidents
MOONTON, PESO and the Games and Entertainment Board (GAB) are working together to implement measures to prevent future match-fixing incidents. This initiative is intended to strengthen esports governance and ensure fair competition, with guidance from regulators and industry stakeholders.
MOONTON stated that it will work closely with PESO and GAB in the future to formulate effective solutions and maintain the integrity of Philippine e-sports.
