The Japanese non-profit organization "Association for Concern for Gambling Addiction" pointed out that due to the impact of the new crown epidemic, online gambling has become rampant, leading to a surge in the number of young people addicted to gambling.
According to the Gambling Addiction Concern Association, the number of people seeking advice from addicts in their 20s and 30s has increased by 14% thanks to the convenience of online platforms.
With inquiries into online sports betting apparently increasing by 16 percentage points, the group fears the pattern will continue. With data showing 28% of cases involved people using illegal means to fund their gambling desires, they warn that criminal activity is likely to increase.
Although Japan currently strictly prohibits most gambling activities, the association is calling for more government regulation of Internet gambling, with the exception of pachinko machines and government-approved venues.
Since Japan plans to open its first casino resort in Osaka by 2030, concerns have arisen about the impact the announcement could have on gambling addiction rates.
