Asia Gaming Brief’s exclusive interview with Congressman Gus Tambunting reveals important details about current gaming rules and regulations in the Philippines.
Councilor Tambunting stressed the need for a strong regulatory framework to effectively manage the gambling industry and the importance of politics in developing gambling legislation.
He touched on the privatization of the gaming industry, noting that serious negotiations are currently underway for the possible sale of government-run casinos. He urged competent management by the private sector in order to improve efficiency.
Furthermore, when asked about the growth of online gambling, especially the shift from POGOs to IGLs, he acknowledged the profitability of the industry but emphasized the need to address related social and safety issues. To ensure effective supervision, he stressed the need for cooperation between regulators and local government agencies.
Furthermore, MP Tambunting said that although POGO has changed its name to IGL, the view of the House of Representatives on the gaming operator is still the same. Still, he's optimistic that as fewer licenses are issued, fewer problems will arise.
Additionally, MP Tambunting provided an exciting discussion on perceptions of gambling as entertainment, highlighting the impact of age and purpose on people’s perceptions.
He also expressed hope that the Philippines’ gaming-friendly policies would continue into the future, noting initiatives being taken to position the country as a global gaming hub.
Finally, on the law enforcement front, Rep. Tambunting emphasized the need to unite other law enforcement agencies such as the Philippine National Police and local governments while strengthening PAGCOR.
