Messaging app Telegram has pledged to work closer with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission to better combat scams and illegal online gambling.
This was the result of a meeting in Dubai between Telegram founder and CEO Pavel Durov and Malaysian Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil. Telegram is used by about 15 million people in Malaysia, and the meeting highlighted growing concerns about scams and illegal gambling activities on the platform.
The Communications and Multimedia Commission considers the company's commitment an important step forward in the fight against cyber threats. The collaboration aims to make regulatory measures aimed at protecting users more effective.
This collaboration also enables the development of new tools and programs to effectively detect and respond to online threats.
Russian businessman Pavel Durov and his brother Nikolai founded Telegram in 2013 as a private messaging service, but it quickly became known for its emphasis on encryption and privacy. Although Telegram has grown into a powerful messaging app with features such as channels, group conversations, and file sharing, its anonymous and encrypted messaging features have attracted users involved in illegal activities such as fraud and gambling.
