The International Betting Integrity Association (IBIA) reported 90 suspicious betting activity alerts to the relevant authorities for the second quarter (Q2) of 2024.
The 90 alerts from the second quarter covered 25 countries and five continents across 8 sports. Notably, esports, football, and table tennis accounted for 84% of all alerts.
In fact, esports alone accounted for about 50% of the total alerts. However, many of these alerts were related to a single case, which also affected the data for the first quarter.
Overall, Poland had the highest number of national alerts, with 6 incidents occurring.
IBIA CEO Khalid Ali commented on the report, saying: "Compared to previous quarters, there was an increase in the number of alerts in the second quarter and the revised first quarter, mainly related to a case in esports.
We are closely monitoring this situation and advocate for increased vigilance while seeking to collaborate with stakeholders for investigations.
"While the increase in the number of alerts understandably draws attention, it is noteworthy that in 2023, the annual number of esports alerts among IBIA member countries significantly decreased.
"This case again highlights the importance and effectiveness of customer account monitoring in detecting suspicious betting and protecting sports events, consumers, and regulated betting markets."
The second quarter integrity report also focuses on Brazil, which is opening its market to licensed operators, expecting to reach a gambling turnover of $34 billion within its territory by 2028, generating $2.8 billion in taxable revenue.
IBIA urges other Latin American jurisdictions to adopt Brazil's regulatory framework and integrity clauses, requiring licensed sports betting operators to join an independent integrity monitoring body.
