United States - The Massachusetts State Lottery reported an expected net profit of $1.16 billion in fiscal year 2024 (ending June 30, 2024), the second-highest total in the lottery's history. Second only to the US$1.19 billion in the previous fiscal year.
The lottery revenue hit a new record of $6.17 billion and paid out approximately $4.53 billion in prizes. An estimated 73.4% of the revenue was returned to players.
“I am proud of our team’s performance in the face of increasing challenges in the marketplace,” said Massachusetts Lottery Commission Chairwoman and State Treasurer Deborah B. Goldberg. “Thanks to our retail partnership Thanks to the continued support of our partners and customers, we are able to provide critical local assistance to 351 communities across the state."
Mark William Bracken, executive director of the Massachusetts Lottery, added: “Thanks to our customers, employees and retail partners across the state, we are once again able to contribute more than $1 billion to our local communities. Funding. We are grateful to Treasurer Goldberg and our commissioners for their guidance as we continue to introduce new ways to engage customers and support our retailers.”
According to the Massachusetts Lottery, since 1972, the agency has generated more than $155 billion in revenue, awarded more than $109 billion in prizes and returned more than $33 billion in net profits in unrestricted local aid.
Massachusetts approves online lottery sales Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey has signed the fiscal year 2025 state budget that includes the legalization of online lottery sales. Lottery officials expect the online platform to launch in about 16 months.
The regulations require that customers must be at least 21. Revenue from online lottery sales will support a funding program for early childhood education and care.
