I am a real estate agent in Cambodia, and I need to expose a group of suspected kidnappers from the Philippines who seem to use renting as their pretext.
They have several common traits:
1. The team includes both males and females, with one man and one woman viewing the properties. The man is responsible for scouting, and the woman for drawing attention.
2. It’s mostly women on Xiaohongshu (a social media platform), claiming they want to start a business in Cambodia.
3. They claim to have just arrived in Phnom Penh from their home countries, unfamiliar with the place. Yet, when it comes to paying for viewings, they suddenly seem to know everything, and give bizarre excuses for refusal.
4. After one or two meetings, they invite me to visit a shop in Yongwang 2, a well-known deserted area in Phnom Penh, in the middle of the night. If I refuse, they still offer a $100 tip, claiming they're new here and need help looking around.
5. Their purpose for renting is extremely vague. They mention needing a local apartment to settle down as soon as they know which city you are in, but no matter what you find, they are never satisfied, or they give absurd reasons to refuse.
6. Sometimes they view the property and contact you a few days later wanting to rent it, saying they are traveling from another city and will arrive a couple of days ahead of schedule. Isn’t that too costly for hotels? Once arrived, they then ask you to accompany them to look at commercial spaces, having earlier laid the groundwork by saying they want to start a business. Some people, being unsuspecting, might agree to go.
9. This type of vague business account, the main page channel has nothing but a screenshot of a Filipino prawn king interface, not even from the business side interface, lacking any information about the address, working hours, or prices, just equipped with an image and ready to eat, are they kidding me?
This time, I won’t reveal all the information; it’s basically judged that they are a group of people.
