Online sports betting and the concurrent Copa America are considered the main drivers of GDP growth in Colombia.
The National Administrative Department of Statistics (DANE) reported that in the second quarter of this year, the GDP of this South American country grew by 2.1%.
According to the Colombian gambling regulator Coljuegos, DANE stated that entertainment activities were significant contributors to economic growth, followed by public administration and agriculture.
Piedad Urdinola, the director of DANE, stated: "The main drivers of growth were arts and entertainment activities, including online gambling, as they are related to the sports events we have had in recent months, and have given way to online betting."
In July, the Colombian team made it to the finals of the Copa America, the top intercontinental football championship in South America, but was defeated by Argentina, during which local online betting traffic in Colombia surged.
