The Netherlands has confirmed the appointment of a new government minister responsible for gambling policy.
Secretary of State for Legal Protection Teun Struycken will succeed Franc Weerwind, who has held the position since 2022.
Struycken's New Social Contract Party strongly advocates for the prohibition of online gambling and emphasizes the need for strict enforcement due to rising debt issues and crime rates.
The new Dutch government lacks an absolute majority, with the National Security Committee, Farmers Movement, People's Party, and Freedom Party all having influence over decisions.
Struycken will primarily oversee the completion of the re-regulation review of the Dutch online gambling market, which began in October 2021.
Struycken's predecessor Weerwind implemented new regulations regarding deposit limits and affordability checks, scheduled to take effect in October.
The Dutch gambling regulator Kansspelautoriteit (KSA) has also formally established new regulations in these areas.
KSA will welcome new leadership, with Michel Groothuizen taking over from René Jansen. Groothuizen made his first speech in this role at the iGB L!VE conference in Amsterdam in August.
