The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has intensified its efforts against illegal offshore gambling, calling for the blocking of three additional websites.
The sites, A Big Candy, Jackpoty, and John Vegas Casino, were found to be operating in violation of the Interactive Gambling Act 2001, leading the regulator to request Australian internet service providers (ISPs) to restrict access.
These websites offer online casino games without the necessary licenses required to operate legally in Australia. "ACMA is reminding consumers that even if a service looks legitimate, it’s unlikely to have important customer protections,” the authority stated. “This means Australians who use illegal gambling services risk losing their money.”
The move is part of ACMA’s broader strategy to shield Australians from unlicensed online gambling. Since it began issuing blocking requests in November 2019, the regulator has blocked a total of 995 illegal gambling and affiliate websites. Additionally, more than 220 illegal services have ceased operations in Australia since ACMA began enforcing these regulations in 2017.
The latest blocking order is part of a continued crackdown in 2024, with ACMA having already made 31 blocking requests this year. Last month, the regulator targeted eight sites for breaching Australian gambling regulations. In March and February, the regulator singled out eight and 12 sites respectively.
The ACMA’s enforcement measures are not limited to sites lacking proper licenses; the authority also targets websites offering prohibited games. Notably, last year saw major brands like Ladbrokes, Neds, Bet365, and Sportsbet scrutinized for breaching in-play betting rules. However, after initial contact from ACMA, these operators were found to comply with regulations, avoiding further action.
