The average occupancy rate for Macau’s five-star hotels reached 90.8% in the first half of the year, the Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) has reported.
The figure marks a 10.2 percentage point increase from the previous year. The average room rate grew 12.4% to MOP1,582.4 ($197).
The growth represents a 96.1% recovery compared to 2019, before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, when five-star hotel rooms averaged MOP1,647.4 ($205) per night. In June, the occupancy rate for five-star hotels was 91.1%, a year-on-year increase of 5 percentage points.
Across all hotel categories—three-, four-, and five-star—the average occupancy rate for the first half of the year was 89.6%, with an average nightly rate of MOP1,402.8 ($175).
The city welcomed 16.73 million visitors in the first six months, a 43.6% increase compared to the same period last year. This translates to an average of 91,918 visitors per day, approximately 82.5% of pre-pandemic levels in 2019. International tourist arrivals saw a significant year-on-year increase of 146.4%, with 1.17 million visitors, representing 67.2% of 2019’s international visitor numbers.
Macau’s chief executive, Ho Iat Seng, has previously projected that the city could attract over 30 million tourists in 2024.
