Riot Games announced on this Friday, the 18th, the appointment of Brazilian Carlos Antunes as the director of eSports for League of Legends (LoL) in the Americas. He will now be responsible for overseeing the entire eSports ecosystem of the MOBA in North America (LCS), along with Latin America (LLA) and Brazil (CBLOL).

According to Riot, Carlos will "lead the strategy and execution of the LoL Esports ecosystems in the Americas" and will be transferred from Brazil to the city of Los Angeles, in the United States, where the company's headquarters is located. The executive will report directly to the director of eSports in the Americas, Raul Fernandez, and to the general director of LoL eSports, Naz Aletaha.

I had the opportunity to see Antunes become one of the most creative, innovative, and successful eSports leaders at Riot, overseeing incredible growth in CBLOL and bringing excitement to the Latin American league as well,” said Raul Fernandez. “He is very focused on what works well for the players, and both the LCS teams and the professional players will enjoy this secure approach to our league's business”.

Carlos's passion for LoL is remarkable. His commitment and empathy for the players, teams, and partners are unwavering, and his track record speaks for itself,” reinforced Naz Aletaha. “I am very happy, because the LCS and the entire LoL eSports ecosystem in the Americas will benefit from his leadership and a unified strategy focused on growth, fandom, and delivering the best that LoL can offer to the community across the region,” she added.

Antunes joined Riot in 2016 as the director of eSports in Brazil, where he oversaw the strategic direction of the entire eSports portfolio of the region, including operations, business development, content, and broadcasting.

Antunes played a key role in the development of CBLOL, which has seen continuous revenue and audience growth year after year since 2018. He has already led strategic partnerships and business development initiatives with notable partners such as Gillette, Mastercard, Red Bull, Santander, Heineken, and Nestlé.

In addition to his contributions to CBLOL, Antunes has worked closely with the leadership team of LoL eSports to strategically support the LLA and LCS over the past six months.

"As I transition to my new role, I am committed to exploring new ways to deliver sport and entertainment to our community in the Americas," said Carlos in a statement sent to the press.

Before Riot, Antunes worked as a leader in digital strategy at various agencies, including DM9DDB, Artplan/Gruda, GEO Eventos, and Esporte Interativo. He graduated from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro with a bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering and a master's degree in Philosophy from the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro. In his passionate pursuit of storytelling and content creation, Antunes also graduated from the Los Angeles Film School and the International Academy of Film.
