According to a report by Advanced Television, Poland may not be the country with the most gambling activities, but this pastime remains popular, with about 26% of Poles engaging in various forms of betting and gaming. Despite strict regulations prohibiting gambling advertisements (except for sports betting on TV), this participation persists. Regulatory bodies and the government continuously seek ways to minimize risks and enhance the safety of gamblers.
The report highlights:
✅ Despite strict regulations, 26% of Poles engage in gambling.
✅ Gambling advertisements are banned on TV, except for sports betting.
✅ The 2009 Gambling Act regulated online games and player safety.
✅ Only sports betting can be advertised on TV.
✅ LOTTO collaborates with Ekstraklasa, displaying its logo on uniforms.
✅ STS sponsors the national football team and multiple clubs.
✅ Superbet and Fortuna sponsor major football teams and sports events.
Historically, gambling in Poland originated from traditional gambling games, which are an integral part of the country's cultural structure. In various social strata, activities like card games, dice games, and event betting fostered community and interaction. However, certain games are restricted; for example, poker and blackjack are only provided by licensed operators, and cockfighting is banned due to safety concerns. After World War II, the government strengthened regulations, considering gambling a potential social hazard.
Poland's Gambling Law
In 2009, the Polish government enacted the Gambling Law to regulate the online betting industry and ensure player safety. The legislation requires online operators to obtain licenses and adhere to responsible gaming standards. While various gambling activities are permitted, advertising is strictly regulated. Sports betting remains the only area that can be promoted during sports events on TV. Additionally, advertisers must disclose the risks associated with gambling and the consequences of illegal activities.
In the report, iGaming expert Filip Kamiński noted that advertising restrictions make it complicated to promote safe payment methods, such as BLIK, which is popular for its simplicity and security. Although these regulations aim to protect consumers, they also limit the dissemination of important information about safe payment options to potential players.
The successful collaborations in the gambling industry further illustrate the integration of the industry with sports. Polish lottery operator LOTTO maintains a long-term partnership with the national football league Ekstraklasa, with all league clubs' uniforms bearing the Lotto logo. The locally renowned betting company STS sponsors the Polish national football team and several clubs, including Jagiellonia Białystok and Pogoń Szczecin. Additionally, Superbet and Fortuna have sponsorship agreements with multiple teams, including GKS Tychy and Legia Warszawa.
