AIB has introduced a voluntary blocking feature for debit and credit card transactions classified as gambling-related.

This feature is designed to help individuals with gambling issues avoid causing financial harm to themselves and their families.

EBS, part of the AIB Group, also offers this service.

The bank states that they will set up the block upon customer request and it can be applied to both personal and business cards.

"We understand that when gambling becomes harmful, it not only affects the individual involved but also their families and friends. It can damage relationships, finances, employment, and mental health," said Geraldine Casey, Managing Director of AIB Retail Banking.

"The financial services industry can play a role in supporting customers to deal with any gambling difficulties they may encounter, and it's important for AIB to do everything we can to help prevent harm."

"That's why we offer additional support for customers who wish to take steps to protect themselves from problem gambling."

Oisín McConville, a former Armagh footballer who has overcome gambling issues, supports the bank's initiative.

He also urges those with gambling problems to utilize the support offered, including support from his work at gamblingcare.ie.

"I want to assure people that you can recover, there is life after gambling addiction, and help is available for anyone who needs it," he said.

AIB suggests that people around someone who may have a gambling problem should be aware of signs that it is becoming harmful.

These include overdue or unpaid bills, concealing or lying about gambling, continuing to gamble even after significant financial losses, and attempting to earn money through gambling to cover rising living costs or bills.

It is estimated that over 130,000 people in Ireland suffer from problem gambling.

According to gamblingcare.ie, a person typically first discloses a gambling problem to staff at financial institutions rather than to family or friends.
