Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos assured the public on Wednesday (September 4) that the case of the dismissed Mayor of Banban, Tarlac Province, Guo Huaping (known as the POGO Mayor), who was arrested in Indonesia, will be resolved immediately.

Marcos posted a video on his official Facebook page, stating that the government will review Guo Huaping's case and ensure the legal process runs smoothly.

Marcos said: "This administration will continue to fulfill its duty to uphold the rule of law. Ms. Guo is entitled to all the legal protections she deserves under national law and our commitment to the rule of law."

"However, we will not let this matter delay the resolution of the case, the outcome of which will be a victory for the Filipino people."

Marcos stated that Guo Huaping's arrest should serve as a "warning" to those attempting to evade legal sanctions, that "it is futile," and emphasized that "the arm of the law is long, and it will reach out to you."

He thanked the Indonesian government and praised the law enforcement agencies for successfully arresting Guo Huaping in Tangerang City, Jakarta.

Marcos said: "I congratulate all law enforcement officers who successfully completed this arrest operation. The public may not know the complex details of this task you have accomplished, but on their behalf, I thank you."

"The Philippines also thanks the Indonesian government for its assistance in this matter. The close cooperation between the two governments made this arrest possible."

Guo Huaping faces complaints for her involvement in the country's illegal Philippine offshore gaming operators (POGO) and her citizenship is also under question.

After receiving a briefing on the impact of a strong tropical storm at Camp Aguinaldo in Quezon City, Marcos said in an interview that arrangements for Guo Huaping's return to the country are being finalized.

He mentioned that the dismissed mayor is expected to return to the country "sometime today."

He added that the public will "soon" know the identities of those responsible for the Guo Wengui escape incident.

Marcos said: "All those suspected of assisting Ms. Guo in illegally escaping from the Philippines will pay the price. What do you think? Who will be dismissed? We will not only dismiss them but also sue them because their actions are illegal and) against all interests of the Philippine judicial system."

Although Guo Huaping became the subject of an immigration watch notice due to the ongoing investigation, she still left the country on July 18.

Reportedly, she traveled to Malaysia, arrived in Singapore on July 21, and went to Indonesia on August 18.

Guo Huaping's sister Shiela and business partner Cassandra Li Ong were previously arrested in Indonesia and have been deported back to the Philippines.

During an interview with the media on August 27, Marcos stated that there would be no "untouchable sacred objects" in the investigation of Guo Huaping's escape, implying he had knowledge of those who helped the former mayor leave the Philippines.

The Department of Justice previously stated that certain individuals would face administrative or criminal cases due to Guo Huaping's escape.

The product of active intelligence cooperation

Meanwhile, the Philippine National Police (PNP) stated that Guo Huaping's arrest was the result of its active intelligence cooperation with the Indonesian National Police.

PNP spokesperson Colonel Jean Fajardo said at a press conference held at Camp Crame in Quezon City on Wednesday that the two police forces signed a memorandum of understanding on intelligence exchange and joint action against transnational crime in 2017.

She said: "The Philippine National Police expresses gratitude for the valuable cooperation of the Indonesian National Police, which facilitated the arrest of Guo Huaping."

Fajardo stated that PNP Chief Rommel Francisco Marbil met with the head of the Indonesian National Police via Zoom on Wednesday morning to discuss arrangements for deporting Guo Huaping back to the Philippines.

"Yes, we plan to bring her back to the country today," she said.

Fajardo mentioned that Guo Huaping would be handed over to the Senate Guard.

She added: "Considering the ongoing diplomatic procedures and the protection of Guo Huaping's family, further details have not yet been released, and Guo Huaping's family has been informed of her arrest."
