The Paraguayan gaming regulator joins the private sector to prevent money laundering and promote responsible gaming.

Paraguay.- The National Gambling Commission (Conajzar), under the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF), signed an agreement with the Paraguayan Association of Gambling Operators (Apoja) and the Paraguayan Chamber of Gambling (CPJA), to prevent gambling addiction and money laundering and promote responsible gaming in Paraguayan territory.

The agreement was signed yesterday, Monday, September 2, by the president of Conajzar, Carlos Liseras; the legal representative of Apoja, Lorena Rojas; and the head of the CPJA, Aníbal Salomón, at the Conajzar offices.

According to the parties, the agreement was born with the intention of strengthening sustainable development policies in the gambling sector in Paraguay, especially the protection of vulnerable groups, such as minors and people with gambling problems.

The head of Conajzar congratulated the entrepreneurs in the sector after the collection of more than USD 15m recorded as canon up to August of this year and reminded that this money is used for vulnerable sectors of our country.

In this regard, Liseras highlighted: "These resources fund the budget of the Diben, go to the municipalities, to the governorships, to the Ministry of Health for Fonaress and also a large part to the Ministry of Sports for the practice of sports in all its modalities".

Liseras also encouraged entrepreneurs to adjust and comply with the demands established in the different current regulations for the sector. "We have to adjust our activities to what the regulations establish, it seems to be very heavy, very costly and impossible to comply; however, with the signing of this agreement that we are finalizing, we will be training, understanding, and learning what it is about," he specified.

For her part, the president of APOJA considered that the signed agreement is a long-cherished dream. "The strategies and methodologies of this agreement are public-private articulation, mutual technical assistance, instances of permanent training, space for containment for people with pathological gambling problems, and international cooperation," explained Rojas.
