Spain: Extremadura recorded a decrease in gaming tax revenue in 2023

Spain.- The General Inspection of the Ministry of Finance has prepared a provisional report on the fiscal year of 2023 in the Community of Extremadura. According to the study, the region records a generalized decrease in the collection of taxes on gambling.

The report provides an analysis of the revenues generated during the past year by the various taxes associated with gambling activities, such as casinos, bingos, recreational machines, and betting.

The Gran Casino de Extremadura, the only authorized casino in the community, recorded an amount of EUR337,000, a decrease of 2.6 percent compared to the 346,000 euros collected in 2022, according to the study.

The bingo sector also showed a downward trend. In 2023, 13,863,000 cards were sold, 5.6 percent less than the 14,682,000 cards sold in 2022. In terms of revenue, there was a decrease of 15.4 percent, going from EUR1.857 million in 2022 to EUR1.571 million in 2023. Electronic bingos experienced an increase in their amount, generating EUR114,000, which represents an increase of 159.5 percent compared to the EUR44,000 of the previous year.

In the case of recreational machines, one of the main sources of tax revenue on gambling, they maintained relative stability. At the end of 2023, there were 4,930 authorizations for the exploitation of these machines, an increase of 0.3 percent compared to the 4,914 authorizations of 2022. The revenues generated reached EUR18.4 million, 0.3 percent less than the EUR18.5 million of 2022.

The betting sector also recorded a decrease in revenue. In 2023, 17 declarations related to betting were presented, generating EUR529,000, 4.7 percent less than the EUR555,000 collected in 2022. Random combinations remained stable, with revenues of EUR7,000, unchanged from the previous year.

Meanwhile, the Junta de Extremadura launched a call for grants to promote safety and health at work within companies, with a particular emphasis on the gambling sector. Thus, last Friday, August 23, Decree 72/2024 was published, which establishes the bases for granting aid aimed at improving working conditions and reducing accidents in the region's companies.
