One month before the first round of municipal elections in Brazil, the sports betting market is starting to get involved. According to Veja, at least two sites are offering odds for the election. In total, 11 capitals are being monitored by Superbet and Sportingbet has opened bets only for the choice of mayor of São Paulo.

The sanction of the so-called "Bets Law" by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, just hours before the end of the first year of his term, shows that the political world has realized that this market requires attention. On the other hand, bettors are also paying attention to electoral disputes. At least two betting sites have markets open with candidates for municipal elections.

Sponsor of the São Paulo, Fluminense, and América-RJ football teams, as well as the Cearense, Baiano, and Capixaba championships and the Rock in Rio festival, Superbet allows bets on the elections of eleven capitals. Bets are open for the mayoral races in Salvador, Rio de Janeiro, Porto Alegre, Florianópolis, Belo Horizonte, Manaus, Curitiba, Belém, Fortaleza, Goiânia, in addition to the capital of São Paulo.

In São Paulo, the most likely candidate to win the elections, according to Superbet, is Pablo Marçal (PRTB). The odds for the coach are 1 real and 53 cents for each real bet; next appears Guilherme Boulos (PSOL), who for each real yields 4.10 reais; Ricardo Nunes (MDB) pays 5.50 reais for one real; Tabata Amaral (PSB), 25 reais for each real; José Luiz Datena (PSDB), 50 reais for one bet and the victory of Marina Helena (Novo), or another candidate, yields 80 reais for each real.

In Rio de Janeiro, the betting house shows the comfortable advantage of Mayor Eduardo Paes (PSD), who is running for re-election. While one real bet on Paes yields 1.03, the candidate who appears right behind is Alexandre Ramagem (PL), whose victory yields 20 reais for each real bet. Tarcísio Motta (PSOL), has an odds of 25 for one; Cyro Garcia (PSTU) of 50 for one and other candidates of 80 reais for one real.

Another site that also allows betting on candidates for elections is Sportingbet, which has opened bets only for the São Paulo elections. In this market, Marçal is still the favorite, but with a less wide advantage. Bets on the PRTB candidate pay 1.65 real for each real, followed by Boulos (3.75 reais), Nunes (4.50 reais), Tabata (26 reais), Datena (34 reais) and Marina Helena (51 reais).

Despite opening bets in only one electoral contest, Sportingbet allows bets on other issues of Brazilian politics. Bettors who think that the block of X, a social network banned by decision of the Supreme Federal Court, will be lifted before October can earn 4.30 reais with one real bet. Those who think the old Twitter will stay off the air in the country longer, earn less: one real yields 1.20.

The most contested elections

According to the betting market, the most contested electoral disputes in the country are in Fortaleza and in Belém. In the capital of Ceará, the current mayor José Sarto (PDT) is ahead, with odds of 2.20 reais, but the victory of Capitão Wagner (União), is quoted at 2.50 reais. Next, appear Evandro Leitão (PT) with 3.75 reais, André Fernandes (PL) with 5.50 reais, and Eduardo Girão (Novo) with 50 reais.

In Belém, Igor Normando (MDB) has the lowest odds with 1.75 real, followed by Éder Mauro (PL), with 1.80 real. Then appear the current mayor Edmilson Rodrigues (PSOL), with 6.60 reais for each real bet. Jefferson Lima (Podemos) and Thiago Araújo (Republicans) are tied, according to the betting house, with odds of 15 reais.
