Indonesian police have dismantled a gang that sold babies through the social networking site Facebook.
The Indonesian police, after receiving intelligence, cracked down on a baby trafficking case in West Java's Depok and arrested eight people. Their ages range from 22 to 41, including four parents who sold their children, two people responsible for scouting and buying babies, one intermediary, and one broker handling the transactions.
The Indonesian channel of CNN reported that investigations by the Depok police found that locals were selling babies on Facebook, with prices ranging from 10 million to 15 million Indonesian Rupiah, equivalent to approximately 840 to 1260 Singapore dollars. After purchasing the babies, the criminal gang would send them to Bali and resell them at a high price of nearly 3800 Singapore dollars.
The police chief of Depok said that this organized gang had completed five transactions in Bali and even had a reservation system. They would coordinate with the parents of the soon-to-be-born children to ensure that the babies were sent to Bali immediately after birth; the target buyers were foreigners.
