Indonesian Minister of Justice Supratman Andi Agtas promised on Wednesday (September 4) to deport controversial mayor Alice Guo back to the Philippines, but did not provide a specific timetable. Alice Guo is accused of having connections with online gambling groups and is suspected of being involved in a 7 billion peso money laundering case.
Indonesian officials stated that there is currently no specific timetable for the deportation, saying it will depend on the results of the police investigation.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Alice Guo was arrested along with a Chinese monk, and had fled the Philippines with the help of a former Chinese police officer. It is believed that this former officer is one of the gambling tycoons, Duanren Wu.
Philippine President Marcos confirmed on the same day that Alice Guo was arrested near Jakarta in Tangerang. He stated that the close cooperation between the two governments facilitated the arrest. After returning to her country, Alice Guo will be handed over to law enforcement and ultimately to the Senate for handling.
Alice Guo ran for mayor of Banban City in 2022 as a Filipino citizen, but a recent Senate investigation found that Alice Guo's fingerprints matched those of Chinese citizen Alice Guo. Although she cooperated with the Senate hearing in May, she has not appeared in public since then, until she was reported to have fled the Philippines by water in July.
Eventually, Alice Guo traveled to Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia with family and friends.
