The UK Betting and Gaming Council (BGC) officially welcomes Grainne Hurst (as shown above) as the new CEO. She has ten years of experience at Entain, holding several senior positions including Director of Corporate Affairs, and has played a key role in the company's public and government relations. Her appointment was first announced in April as part of a leadership restructuring, with former CEO Michael Dugher moving to the position of Chairman.
White Paper
Following her appointment, Hurst expressed excitement about the challenges ahead, especially in implementing the key reform tasks outlined in the government's white paper. She stated, "As the CEO of the Betting and Gaming Council, I am very excited." She described the BGC as "an industry champion of many iconic brands, both domestically in the UK and globally." She explained that it is a "critical moment" for BGC members, who cover 110,000 jobs and serve millions of customers in the UK.
One of Hurst's main focuses is on implementing the reforms proposed in the white paper. She noted, "We have a lot of work ahead," mentioning initiatives such as introducing statutory levies to address gambling problems, creating a consumer ombudsman to improve consumer redress, and ensuring financial risk checks for online users.
Stability, Growth, and Diversity
While regulation remains a priority, Hurst also talked about the importance of industry stability, growth, and diversity. She pointed out, "These efforts must be based on robust data and always guided by the voice of the ordinary consumer." She also stated that diversity is crucial for the future of the industry. Hurst actively advocates for promoting women in the gaming industry, particularly through her work on the board of Global Gaming Women, where she oversees its expansion in regions like the UK, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand.
Safer Gambling
BGC's new chairman Michael Dugher also praised Hurst's appointment, stating, "She brings years of regulatory industry experience and knowledge, along with a bold vision and strategy to refresh and reset the future of the organization." He is confident in Hurst's leadership to elevate BGC's safe gambling standards and represent its employees and customers.
In her career, Hurst has been committed to safer gambling practices. At Entain, she played a significant role in launching the company's global safe gambling strategy "Changing for the Bettor," which has been widely recognized.
BGC represents over 90% of the UK's regulated betting and gaming industry, playing a significant role in the national economy, contributing £7.1 billion in added value and generating £4.2 billion in tax revenues.
Hurst's leadership marks a new chapter for BGC, one that promises to focus on responsibility and innovation. She concluded, "Millions of us enjoy betting... I look forward to supporting everything our members do for their customers, communities, and the country." She sets the tone for her upcoming tenure.
