New Jersey's gambling regulatory body has imposed a $33,000 fine on the sports betting company bet365 for accepting bets on events with known outcomes and games that were not approved for betting.
The state's Division of Gaming Enforcement revealed that the company had repeatedly accepted bets on events that had already occurred.
In one case, it accepted bets on a mixed martial arts match that had taken place a week earlier and was being recorded.
This is the second disciplinary action taken by New Jersey regulators against bet365 in just over two months.
In July, the gaming enforcement division required bet365 to refund $519,000 to customers who won bets but were paid less than the amount due because the company unilaterally changed the odds at the time of payout.
In this instance, the company told New Jersey regulators that the change in odds was due to a "clear mistake." However, the acting head of the enforcement division pointed out that any company wishing to cancel or change a payout must seek approval from the agency before doing so, adding that bet365 had failed to do this.
The company also accepted bets on events that were not approved, including European soccer friendlies and bets on Rutgers University's football team, which are not permitted by New Jersey's gambling regulatory body.
In most cases, bet365 canceled bets totaling over $257,000 and refunded the money to customers. However, the state noted that in one case, the company unilaterally changed the odds without regulatory approval and then paid out the winning bets.
The company provided several incorrect explanations to the regulatory body, including human error and incorrectly loading the start times of events into its betting app. The company also stated that in some cases, the software did not operate as designed.
