The Victorian Gambling and Casino Control Commission (VGCCC) has announced an investigation into the regulation of bingo games, aiming to create a fairer and more modern environment for the game.
Bingo's revenue is substantial, with profits reported at AUD 107 million (USD 71 million) for the fiscal year 2023. The company also allocates a portion of its earnings to fund charitable organizations.
Commission Chair Fran Thorne stated, "In recent years, the commercial bingo game landscape has modernized, transitioning from traditional paper-based games to electronic games with large jackpots.
"Given these developments, we must assess and address issues of fairness, integrity, and potential gambling harms, especially for vulnerable groups such as the elderly, indigenous communities, women, and low-income individuals.
"Despite regulatory oversight, we continue to receive reports and allegations of unlicensed operations and potential fraudulent activities."
With this in mind, the investigation will evaluate whether current bingo game regulations are sufficient, examine whether cash transactions are susceptible to criminal activities, and ensure that profits benefit community organizations.
Thorne continued, "This investigation is an opportunity to understand how bingo games have evolved with technology and to ensure that the game remains a valuable social outlet for many community members.
"Our goal is to identify risks, reduce potential harms, and eliminate actions that threaten the integrity and fairness of the game."
The VGCCC invites all stakeholders, including customers, industry participants, community organizations, and concerned citizens to participate in the investigation.
