In the meeting, progress was made towards the construction of a cooperation agreement to prevent and combat fraud in sports events in the country.
Brazil.- The recently appointed head of the National Secretariat for Sports Betting and Economic Development of Sport, from the Ministry of Sports, Giovanni Rocco Neto met with the president of the National Association of Games and Lotteries (ANJL), Plínio Lemos Jorge. The agenda of the meeting included one of the most important issues for the sector, that of the manipulation of sports betting results.
In the meeting, both executives outlined the next steps towards the construction of a cooperation agreement between the ANJL and the Secretariat to prevent and combat fraud in sports events in the country. The president of the association emphasized that, in addition to the accredited bettors who are harmed, the betting houses are the main victims of these manipulation maneuvers.
“Since its creation, the ANJL has reiterated the importance of integrity in the betting market and in sport. We brought this message to Secretary Giovanni Rocco, who also understands that it is necessary to purge, once and for all, these criminal actions. We want to work in collaboration with the Ministry of Sports so that, once suspicions are identified, we can act quickly and effectively to combat this evil,” affirmed Lemos Jorge.
Other topics discussed in the meeting were the potential of the betting market in Brazil and the regulatory process of the sector, which is still ongoing. As already done with the Secretariat of Prizes and Betting (SPA), from the Ministry of Finance, Lemos Jorge highlighted that the ANJL is available to contribute to discussions and proposals for the benefit of the sector, the bettors, and Brazilian sport.
The National Secretariat for Sports Betting and Economic Development of Sport is responsible for: conducting studies and planning, coordinating, and supervising actions that boost the development of the sports market, in order to facilitate access to teams and structures and the improvement of national sport at all levels.
In the area of sports betting, the new National Secretariat will be responsible for ensuring the integrity of the unpredictability of sports events and results, in addition to planning, coordinating, and implementing partnerships with public and private entities, both national and international, to maintain the integrity of sports betting, with the aim of detecting, combating, and preventing the manipulation of sports events and results.

The new ministerial body will be responsible for working in collaboration with other bodies of the federal public administration, the States, the Federal District, and the Municipalities in the prevention and combat of the manipulation of sports betting, within the scope of the Secretariat's competencies.
