According to reports from Myanmar media, the new town project area in Myawaddy, near the Thai-Myanmar border, has recently become a hotspot for frequent activities of online scam gangs.
According to multiple sources, online scam gangs involving Chinese nationals are plotting to relocate to the borders of Cambodia and Laos to evade increasingly severe crackdowns.
The border forces have issued a stern warning, demanding the complete eradication of online scams and online money laundering centers by October 2024. However, despite facing significant pressure, scam activities in the area seem to have not been effectively curbed and continue to spread in the shadows.
Insiders helping Thailand and Myanmar combat human trafficking revealed that a company named Ratatiya is still operating, and scam gangs are gradually moving towards the borders of Laos and Cambodia.
These gangs use social media platforms like Telegram and Facebook to post job advertisements, luring job seekers to places like Myawaddy with high-paying jobs, only to involve them in the whirlpool of online scams.
Industry insiders warn that although surface-level crackdowns may temporarily suppress some scam activities, the "Tiger" gangs (telecom fraud) will not easily give up. They might first move to Cambodia, then to Laos, and might even flow back to other remote areas of Myanmar to continue their fraudulent schemes.
