Omar Aziz announced his intention to contact the Attorney General of the Republic until an appropriate regulatory framework is implemented.

Brazil.- Senator Omar Aziz announced his intention to contact the Attorney General of the Republic (PGR) with the aim of suspending sports betting sites until there is adequate regulation by the federal government.

In December of last year, the National Congress approved a bill aimed at regulating the betting sector and authorizing online casinos, with the expectation that regulation will come into effect in 2025. Aziz expressed his concern about the ease of access to betting, which, according to him, has proliferated and caused losses to many Brazilian families.

“It is necessary to regulate betting. We cannot leave things as they are. Therefore, I ask the PGR to file a motion with the Supreme Federal Court (STF) and that all betting houses have their operations suspended until the Government regulates this operation. Families get into debt, children and adolescents are exposed to it, and money for food is exchanged for bets in which the poorest families always lose. Let's turn this game around!”, Aziz commented on his Instagram account.

The senator made an analogy between the situation of the betting platforms and that of the social network X (formerly Twitter), currently suspended in Brazil, highlighting the need for more rigorous actions.

Aziz's initiative complements a bill already presented by Senator Randolfe Rodrigues. This project aims to ban advertising and sponsorship of betting companies, as well as restrict betting on political events, such as elections, plebiscites, and referendums.
