The Senate received a request to establish the CPI of illegal bets. The request was filed by Senator Soraya Thronicke (Podemos-MS) and already has 31 signatures. The movement of the parliamentarians for the opening of this commission occurred after the Civil Police of Pernambuco launched, at the beginning of September, Operation Integration, which investigates a money laundering scheme and gambling.
Soraya Thronicke states that the CPI is justified given the need to identify possible flaws in the regulation and supervision of these activities. She emphasizes that Congress approved the regulation of sports betting, but gambling, the "jogo do bicho", remains illegal and has advanced on these platforms. Moreover, the Executive Power is still drafting the regulatory ordinances.
Soraya says she voted in favor of regulating bets in Brazil and does not regret it. “It's no use closing our eyes to the reality of online games in Brazil. But strict supervision is necessary. There can be no sponsorship, no advertising,” she told Coluna do Estadão.
The parliamentarian also noted the lack of control over the actions of influencers. “The CPI allows a detailed analysis of the financial operations related to virtual online betting games, aiming at the implementation of more robust control mechanisms and combating organized crime, as well as protecting the consumer and the integrity of the market,” she adds.
In Operation Integration, 19 arrest warrants and 24 search and seizure warrants were issued, including the seizure of assets (luxury cars, real estate, aircraft, and vessels) and values, in addition to the blocking of financial assets worth R$ 2.1 billion.
Among the seized assets is a Ferrari valued at approximately R$ 7 million, cash totaling more than R$ 160 million, dozens of properties, vessels, aircraft, vehicles, and valuable objects.
The police operation is the same that arrested the lawyer and digital influencer Deolane Bezerra, who promoted, on her social networks, Esportes da Sorte. Deolane claims to be the victim of a “great injustice.”
The owner of the betting house Esportes da Sorte, Darwin Filho, and his wife, Maria Eduarda Quinto Filizola, surrendered to the Civil Police of Pernambuco on Thursday, the 5th, after being targets of the same operation. The company's defense says the site complies with the law and states it is at the disposal of the authorities.
Currently, the Senate has another commission that investigates the actions of bets, but the investigation is about another approach. It is the CPI of Manipulation of Results, scheduled to end on October seventh. It is chaired by Senator Jorge Kajuru (PSB-GO) and investigates fraud in game fixing.
