Sky Bet has been reprimanded in the UK for unlawfully processing customers’ data through advertising cookies without consent.
The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) said Sky Betting and Gaming was sharing people’s personal information with advertising technology companies before they had the chance to accept or reject advertising cookies.
No “deliberate misuse” was found, but the regulator said the actions were “not lawful, transparent or fair.”
“Our enforcement action against Sky Betting and Gaming is a warning that there will be consequences if organisations breach the law, and people are denied the choice over targeted advertising,” said Stephen Bonner, deputy commissioner at the ICO.
The misuse of cookies technology took place between January 10 and March 23 last year, the ICO said.
Sky Betting and Gaming made changes in March 2023 to correct the matter.
