Senator Soraya Thronicke led the request, which already has enough signatures to proceed.
Brazil.- Senator Soraya Thronicke submitted a request to open a Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry (CPI) to investigate illegal gambling, its involvement in other illicit practices, and the damage it causes to the budgets of Brazilian families. The legislator obtained the 31 necessary signatures to proceed with the creation of the new entity.
According to the site O Cafézinho, the Federal Senate set a deadline of 130 days to conclude the work of the Commission, in addition to approving a budget of R$110,000 (USD19,000). The group of senators that will make up the sessions will consist of eleven titular members and seven alternates.
In justifying the request, Thronicke stated that it is necessary to investigate possible failures in the regulation of betting and other games that allow money laundering and other illicit activities.
“We need to investigate the economic impact of these games on families and their connections with criminal activity. There are indications that these sites are being used for money laundering by criminal organizations,” stated the senator.
Another point that must be addressed in the CPI is the involvement of digital influencers in promoting gambling without explaining the risks of this practice and in some cases promising quick and easy enrichment.
