The vote of the Speaker of the House, Facundo Torres Lima, was necessary to break the tie. This will lead to the introduction of changes to Law 10.793. What are the approved modifications?
Argentina.- In a marathon legislative session that concluded at 4:56 in the morning, it was finally possible to stop the repeal of the law that authorizes and regulates online gambling in the province of Córdoba. In a close vote that ended with 35 votes on each side, it was the Speaker of the House, Facundo Torres Lima, whose vote broke the tie and moved forward with the modification of Law 10.793, enacted in 2021.
In this way, the ruling party managed to impose its idea that necessary changes be made to the regulation, but not to proceed with the repeal of the law, as proposed by the provincial opposition.
For the law to remain in effect, the ruling party, through legislator María Acevedo, promoted a series of changes to the regulation, specifically in Articles 8, 14, and 20, in addition to incorporating the Biometric Data Registry within the Player Registry to prevent access by minors, as a key point of the reform.
Additionally, progress was made in providing the enforcement authority –Lotería de Córdoba– with the necessary mechanisms for the control of advertising and the mandatory implementation of prevention campaigns.
In her presentation in the chamber, Acevedo listed the modifications introduced to the online gambling law:
“The 2021 law came to regulate what already existed (regarding gambling). Today our modifications aim to improve that regulation,” emphasized Acevedo and concluded: “Repealing the law does not solve the problem of illegal gambling, but rather exacerbates it”.
