Despite the growth compared to 2023, the activity showed a slight decline compared to the first three months of the year.
Spain.- The General Directorate for Gambling Regulation (DGOJ) released the figures for online gambling in Spain during the second quarter of the year. The Gross Gaming Revenue for the quarter was EUR346.34m, which represents a decrease of -1.24 percent compared to the previous quarter and an increase of 10.79 percent compared to the same quarter of 2023.
From the rest of the main magnitudes analyzed in the report, deposits and withdrawals by players, increased their variation rates compared to the previous year by 17.87 percent and 17.76 percent respectively. Compared to the previous quarter, deposits decreased by -0.30 percent and withdrawals increased by 0.97 percent.
Meanwhile, marketing spending experienced an increase of 6.59 percent compared to the previous quarter and new accounts rose by 1.77 percent.
Breaking down the GGR by gaming segments, those EUR346.34m are distributed in EUR145.48m in Betting (42 percent); EUR3.61m in Bingo (1.04 percent); EUR171.69m in Casino (49.57 percent) and EUR25.56m in Poker (7.38 percent). The Contests sector was totally marginal during this period with only EUR 2,000 representing a minuscule percentage of the total.
Thus, the betting segment showed a rate of decrease compared to the previous quarter of -3.19 percent, but growth of 9.13 percent compared to the same quarter of the previous year. Conventional counterparty sports betting decreased by -10.34 percent while live betting increased by 5.75 percent compared to the first three months of the year. On the other hand, counterparty horse racing bets increased by 36.62 percent and other counterparty bets decreased by -12.25 percent.
In the bingo segment, there was a fall of -13.94 percent compared to the previous quarter and an increase of 1.87 percent compared to the same quarter of 2023.
The casino section showed good numbers, with growth of 2.34 percent compared to the first quarter of 2024 and an annual variation rate of 14.57 percent. This annual growth occurred in slot machines with 19.52 percent and in live roulette 9.57 percent. Compared to the previous quarter, conventional roulette decreased by -21.10 percent and live roulette by -12.05 percent, while slot machines increased by 13.71 percent and Black Jack by 12.04 percent.
Poker presented this second quarter of 2024 a decrease of -10.15 percent compared to the first three months of the year and -0.76 percent in relation to the same quarter of the previous year. Compared to the first quarter of the year, tournament poker grew by 1.24 percent and cash poker decreased by -37.02 percent. Therefore, the annual variation rates are negative -20.63 percent in cash poker and positive 6.24 percent in the case of tournament poker.

Regarding marketing spending in the quarter, it was EUR120.21m, broken down as follows:
Compared to the previous quarter, this expense increased by 6.59 percent and an annual variation of 22.46 percent. Compared to the previous quarter, sponsorship grew by 24.64 percent; promotions by 11.85 percent and advertising by 5.24 percent, while affiliates decreased by -11.06 percent.
Compared to the previous year, sponsorship decreased by -1.32 percent, while affiliates increased by 0.88 percent, promotions by 27.15 percent, and advertising by 24.52 percent.
