Plan for total ban on Australian digital gambling advertising - report

Details of reported proposals on Australian gambling advertising have been revealed, with a government minister confirming she wants to “deal with the saturation of ads.”

Sky News Australia reported on Sunday that, from 2025, there could be a total ban on digital advertising and that television ads could be banned one hour either side of sports broadcasts.

Sky News Australia’s political editor, Andrew Clennell, said outside of that period only two gambling ads per hour would be allowed amid a blackout during children’s programming.

Michelle Rowland, the communications minister in the Albanese government, told the programme: “The key issue here is threefold: We want to ensure that we protect children.

“We want to break the nexus between wagering and sport and we want to deal with the saturation of ads - particularly as that impacts on young men aged around 18 to 35.

“We want people to be excited about the game, not about the odds."

Rowland added that while around 75 per cent of gambling losses in Australia come from land-based gambling, the government needs to deal with the rise in online wagering “well.”
