Thai boxer "Suthiwat" was arrested by Thai police for promoting an illegal gambling website on the social media platform Facebook.
According to Thai news reports, the boxer was paid 1,500 Thai Baht (approximately $45.18) for each post he made on his Facebook account, which has about 440,000 followers.
The arrest was a decision made by the Thai government following a joint investigation, and it is part of the government's strict measures against the promotion and advertising of online illegal gambling. This is also one of the long-term measures by the Thai government to combat domestic illegal gambling.
The investigation was led by Police Major General Jiraphob Bhuridei of the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) and Police Major General AthipPongsiwapai of the Technology Crime Suppression Division (TCSD).
Suthiwat was found to have violated Section 12 of the Gambling Act of 1935, which prohibits unauthorized gambling advertisements.
A representative from the TCSD stated: "We have been closely monitoring online activities, and through continuous efforts, we finally uncovered this case."
Despite Thailand's hopes to legalize gambling and casinos in the near future, the country strictly prohibits any form of gambling and illegal gambling advertisements.
Previously, during the UEFA Championship, the Royal Thai Police arrested over 2,600 individuals related to illegal gambling (including both online and offline).
