The Swedish Gambling Authority, Spelinspektionen, has released the financial data for the second quarter of 2024, highlighting the overall growth of the gambling market in the country.
Overall, the turnover for all vertical industries reached SEK 6.89 billion (USD 663.43 million), a 2.8% increase year-over-year, and an increase from SEK 6.67 billion in the first quarter of 2024.
However, compared to the same period last year, only commercial online gambling and land-based commercial gaming saw growth, while community games and hall bingo revenues remained the same as last year at SEK 52 million. Public purpose games, national lotteries, state lotteries, slot games, and state casino games (Casino Cosmopol) all saw declines in turnover.
As expected, commercial online gambling accounted for the majority of Sweden's gambling turnover, reaching SEK 4.57 billion this quarter, up 9.2% year-over-year.
National lotteries and slot games were the second highest category, at SEK 1.29 billion, but saw a decline of 7.5%, while public purpose games and national lotteries dropped from SEK 896 million in the second quarter of 2023 to SEK 893 million in the second quarter of 2024.
Land-based commercial gaming revenue grew by 5.7% to SEK 56 million, but state-owned casino games (Casino Cosmopol) declined by 73.8% compared to the same period last year.
Meanwhile, Casino Cosmopol is about to close, as the company struggles with profitability, with Svenska Spel's profits down 19% in the first half of the year.
Additionally, Spelinspektionen reported that as of the end of this quarter, 112,000 people were banned from gambling through Spelpaus.se, an increase of 1.7% from the previous quarter.
In other results-based news, Maryland announced its sports betting financial data for August, with a total betting amount of USD 377 million.
