The new public office will be responsible for creating public policies in this area.
Argentina.- The government of the Province of Buenos Aires has officially established the Interministerial Board for the Prevention and Treatment of Problematic Compulsive Gambling in Adolescents, with the goal of promoting the “design and implementation of public policies” aimed at combating child gambling addiction.
This decision was formalized through decree Nº 2002/2024, published in the Official Gazette, and is signed by Governor Axel Kicillof and several ministers, including Nicolás Kreplak (Health), Javier Alonso (Security), Juan Martín Mena (Justice), Jesica Laura Rey (Communication), Andrés Larroque (Community Development), and Carlos Bianco (Government).
Among its objectives, the new institution will have the responsibility to design “public policies aimed at the prevention, mitigation, reversal, assistance, and treatment of problematic compulsive gambling in children and adolescents”, as well as raising awareness about the issue through communication products.
In detail, the interministerial board will be coordinated by the Ministry of Government and will include a principal representative from the Ministry of Government, the Ministry of Health, the General Directorate of Culture and Education, the Ministry of Security, the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights, the Ministry of Public Communication, the Provincial Institute of Lottery and Casinos (IPLyC), and the Provincial Agency for Childhood and Adolescence.
“It is essential to establish an Interministerial Board aimed at urgently addressing the issue of problematic compulsive gambling in children and adolescents of Buenos Aires, also establishing the creation of an Observatory of Problematic Compulsive Gambling in Adolescents, which must connect with all stakeholders and different interested parties in the field,” stated the Buenos Aires executive branch.
In this regard, the Observatory will have among its tasks to generate monitoring mechanisms for the issue in the province of Buenos Aires, as well as to develop indicators aimed at preventing the proliferation and preventing child gambling addiction, “proposing courses of action aimed at better implementation of public policies to combat it”.
