According to the latest "Gaming Industry Outlook" report released today by the American Gaming Association (AGA), the U.S. gaming industry is facing a slowdown in growth after a period of rapid expansion. The report provides insights into the current and future economic conditions of the gaming industry by analyzing trends in casino visitors, executive sentiment, and key economic indicators. The report states, "The short-term outlook is more moderate compared to previous years."

Slowing Growth

The report indicates that in the third quarter of 2024, there was a contraction in actual economic activity, with the Current Conditions Index—which measures actual economic activity in the industry including gaming revenue, employment, and employee wages—at 97.3. This decline corresponds to an annualized contraction rate of 2.7%. The report explains, "The gaming industry expanded rapidly at the end of 2023 and the beginning of 2024, but has shown signs of slowing in recent quarters."

The Future Conditions Index, which forecasts industry prospects, dropped to 98.9 in the third quarter, indicating an expected contraction of 1.1% over the next six months. Research shows that gaming industry executives have significantly weakened expectations for growth. The report notes, "More executives expect revenue growth to slow rather than accelerate," citing data showing that slightly more than half of the executives expect the pace of revenue growth to slow over the next three to six months.

Multiple Factors at Play

The slowdown in growth is attributed to multiple factors, including inflation, rising interest rates, and increased caution in hiring and capital investment. Most gaming industry executives now see economic uncertainty as a limiting factor in operations. The number of executives expecting a decrease in customer activity in the coming months is also increasing.

Nevertheless, the report points out that the proportion of consumers expected to visit casinos over the next 12 months remains stable and has increased compared to last year, while household wealth is expected to continue growing. AGA's research also cites analysis from the Oxford Economics Institute, which, although expecting the U.S. economy to slow down in the coming months, sees a low probability of entering a recession. The Federal Reserve's rate cuts could also alleviate some of the economic challenges faced by the gaming industry.

Investment Priorities

In addition to revenue, gaming industry executives are also more cautious about hiring. More executives expect hiring to decrease over the next six months. At the same time, investment priorities have shifted.

Gaming equipment suppliers now expect capital investment to slow down. They are also more cautious about sales of gaming equipment, whether for replacement purposes or for new projects or expansions.

Recently, the Knowsley District Council announced plans to introduce a gambling heat map to identify areas with prominent gambling issues. Each local government must reassess its gambling policy every three years. Councilor Shelley Powell, member of the Cabinet for Community and Neighbourhood Affairs at Knowsley District Council, proposed the plan in the report.

Significant Addition to Current Policy

Councilor Powell stated, "A significant and notable change to the current policy is the addition of a gambling heat map."

"This initiative aims to help the council and its partners assess the current situation in a region, while we will also increase data on public health and other aspects."

"The heat map will be used to identify areas with high population density that may be more susceptible to gambling harm. These areas will receive special attention, and resources will be concentrated to help individuals with gambling problems."

The council report emphasizes that factors such as age, poverty level, education level, gender, and race all influence the incidence of gambling and its associated harms. Therefore, the purpose of the regional profile is to create a detailed overview for the community and its demographic structure.

High Levels of Poverty

In Knowsley, Merseyside, the rate of gambling harm is comparable to the national level, but the risk factors associated with poverty are particularly pronounced. For example, studies have repeatedly shown that unemployed or economically inactive individuals are more likely to fall into gambling problems. In Knowsley, the proportion of unemployed or economically inactive individuals is 24.3%, higher than the national average of 20.5% in England.

Recent news about the failure of industry self-regulation in the UK has led to an increase in problem gambling incidents. The government's white paper revising the UK's Gambling Act of 2005 is a step forward, expected to take effect in February 2025.

Reports on the shocking scale of illegal and unregulated gambling in the UK highlight the increasingly severe regulatory issues. The latest report from a team at the University of Bristol points out the surge in media advertising during the opening weekend of the Premier League.

Innovative Ideas to Reduce Problem Gambling

The heat map is a strategic tool designed to reduce the negative impacts of gambling in the Knowsley area. By identifying specific areas and operators that raise concerns, this tool enables early intervention measures to be implemented. This proactive approach helps prevent and mitigate the harmful effects of gambling, ensuring the well-being of individuals and the community as a whole.

However, critics argue that the heat map approach may not effectively address the root causes of gambling addiction. Identifying specific areas and operators alone does not address the deeper reasons why people become addicted to gambling. Critics believe that early intervention measures may only provide short-term relief and fail to address long-term consequences.

Moreover, there are concerns that focusing solely on reducing negative impacts might overlook the potential benefits of responsible gambling, such as generating income for the local economy. Therefore, it is necessary to consider alternative approaches that address the complexity of gambling addiction, while also advocating responsible practices.
