New York Governor Kathy Hochul has signed legislation requiring sports betting advertisements to include warnings about the potential harmful and addictive effects of gambling.
Previously, all gambling and sports betting advertisements had to provide a hotline number for gambling addicts and include warnings about problem gambling. The bill took effect on October 1 (Tuesday), expanding existing laws to require mobile sports betting and other gambling platforms to comply with the same rules.
Prior to this, online sports betting advertisements were not subject to this legislation. However, responsible gambling guidelines set by the New York Gaming Commission were already applicable to such advertisements.
Official Comments
Governor Hochul stated: "Protecting New Yorkers from the dangers and addictive impacts of problem gambling and sports betting is vital for the prosperity of our great state."
"I hope New Yorkers can safely enjoy their favorite activities while remaining cautious when necessary. I believe that with the signing of this new bill, it will be easier for New Yorkers to access safe resources to protect themselves from addictive effects."
The bill also stipulates that the Gaming Commission must work with the Commissioner of Addiction Services and Support to ensure that all gambling activity advertisements provide a problem gambling hotline number.
New York State Senator Leroy Comrie said that residents "can choose from a variety of gambling options, including casinos, racetracks, lotteries, and sports betting platforms like FanDuel and DraftKings. It is crucial to ensure that users understand the risks of addiction and know how to seek help when needed."
"While state revenue is certainly important, promoting responsible gambling and protecting our communities are equally critical. I appreciate my colleague, Assembly Member Clyde Vanel, for working with me and our colleagues to pass this bill, and I thank Governor Hochul for signing it into law."
Brian O’Dwyer, Chairman of the New York Gaming Commission, said: "New York recognizes the importance of responsible gambling practices and has implemented strong safeguards to protect and educate bettors."
