The Dutch Gaming Authority (KSA) has released its annual market scan for 2023 and the monitoring report for the first half of 2024, revealing growth in the Dutch gambling market.
In 2023, the total gambling revenue (GSR) of the legal market reached 4 billion euros (4.38 billion USD), a 21.2% increase from the 3.3 billion euros in 2022. This growth is primarily attributed to both online and offline casino gaming industries. However, the GSR of physical casinos, despite growing by 19%, still remains below the levels of 2019.
The market is mainly dominated by land-based casino games (33%) and lotteries (30%), with sports betting remaining the smallest sector, accounting for only 9%.
Despite the growth, Dutch players spend less on gambling compared to the European average, with an annual per capita expenditure of 272 euros in 2023, while the European average is 339 euros.
The online gambling industry has continued to see steady growth, with the GSR of the online market in the first half of 2024 increasing by 8%, reaching 752 million euros.
Games against the house, including table games and slot machines, dominate the online sector, accounting for 72% of the total GSR.
At the beginning of 2024, the number of online gambling accounts also increased, averaging 1.07 million per month. However, the number of active players is lower, with about 455,000 people gambling per month.
Young people aged 18-23 are taking up an increasingly large market share, accounting for 10.8% of the GSR in 2024, up from 9.6% in 2023. However, studies have found that this group generally incurs fewer losses, averaging 55 euros per month.
Finally, the report also highlights an increase in gambling addiction treatment, with 2,456 people receiving treatment in 2023, a 28% increase from 2022. However, this growth may partly reflect improvements in reporting by addiction institutions.
