Senator Otto Alencar postponed the Senate session scheduled to initiate the CPI of Bets. Originally planned for this Friday (25), the meeting will now take place next week. The cancellation occurred because the House does not hold in-person sessions on Fridays. By regulation, as the senior member, he presides over the installation of CPIs.
With almost all members already appointed by political parties, the CPI of Bets was proposed to investigate the “growing influence of online virtual betting games on Brazilian family budgets”.
This Friday (25) was supposed to be the meeting to set up the Commission, where the president and vice-president would be elected, and the rapporteur of the matter would be appointed, expected to be Soraya Thronicke (Podemos-MS), who proposed its creation.
In addition to the postponement of the session, there has been a change in the CPI of Bets. On the same Friday, the leadership of the Social Democratic Party decided to appoint Senator Otto Alencar (PSD-BA), replacing his party and state colleague, Angelo Coronel.
The CPI will have 130 days to conclude its work, with a spending limit of R$ 110,000. According to the request, the CPI will also investigate the possible association of online betting companies “with criminal organizations involved in money laundering practices, as well as the use of digital influencers in the promotion and dissemination of these activities”.
The intention, according to Soraya Thronicke, is to analyze the practice of currency evasion and money laundering, as well as the influence of Brazilian personalities in the operation of betting programs. The suspicion is that the software is programmed to cause losses to bettors and always ensure an exaggerated profit margin for the companies.
