The Minister of Sports, André Fufuca, met on Wednesday (30), in Brasília, with Emanuel Macedo de Medeiros, co-founder and Global CEO of SIGA (Sport Integrity Global Alliance), an independent organization dedicated to sports integrity. Among the topics on the agenda were fairness in sports, through the sharing of information, monitoring of the sports betting system, and the identification of suspicious activities.
On Tuesday (29), the national secretary of Sports Betting and Economic Development of Sports, Giovanni Rocco Neto, participated in the signing of a Technical Cooperation Agreement with companies specialized in monitoring and integrity of betting – including SIGA -, alongside the secretary of Prizes and Betting of the Ministry of Finance, Régis Dudena.
The agreement reaffirms the commitment of the Federal Government to combat disorder in the betting market.
During the meeting, Fufuca reiterated the need for monitoring sports betting to prevent fraud. “We must have integrity. If there is one thing that cannot exist, it is any type of illegality in sports betting. Regarding this, we will be totally vigilant to ensure it does not occur. And, if it does, those responsible must be punished”, the minister added.
For Emanuel Medeiros, the integrity of sports betting is one of the fundamental pillars for the healthy and sustainable development of the sports sector, for the Brazilian and global economy.
“We are 100% committed to collaborating with the Brazilian government in this common goal. Our extensive knowledge and expertise, as well as our universal standards and rating system are available, whether for sports organizations, betting operators and regulators, as well as the government and other economic agents, such as sponsors, so that sports in Brazil are governed, operated, and practiced in accordance with the highest standards of integrity”, he added.
The regulation of sports betting became necessary after the approval of the 2018 law, which established a four-year deadline for its implementation — a deadline that was not met.
Secretary Giovanni Rocco Neto highlighted that “the chaotic scenario, worsened by the pandemic and changes in the habits of the population, requires a firm action by the State to ensure a safe environment for bettors”.
The National Secretariat of Sports Betting and Economic Development of Sports is considering signing a technical cooperation agreement similar to the one signed with the Ministry of Finance.
